It’s official: Magento is the King of eCommerce

Being connoisseurs of the web design world we’ve long since specialised in Magento. For years we’ve extolled the benefits of choosing this platform to our clients as our solution of choice; however it now seems that this hasn’t just been officially recognised, but has been shown as the unsurpassable eCommerce platform of choice for the many millions of retail websites in existence.

Here we’ve taken a look at the online commerce market of 2014, where Magento stands and just what it is that has made this platform so popular.

The online shopping world of 2014

A recent study by world respected tech company Alexa has found that as of October 2014 Magento accounted for 25.6% of the top 1-million eCommerce websites in the world. This market share has seen an unprecedented increase from six months previously, when it held a 13.5% share.

The runner up in the landscape of today is WooCommerce, coming in with a market share of 20.8%. Whilst this is also a remarkable increase (up from 9.7% in April 2014) Magento is looking set for a long reign as the King of eCommerce as Google search analysis shows the most interest in this platform from China, the fastest growing economy in the world.

So, what’s the trouble with WooCommerce?

WooCommerce is the WordPress platform for eCommerce; when considered alongside Magento these two powerhouses account for a staggering 46.4% of the market. This pretty lofty figure becomes ever more impressive when you consider that there were over 20 different platforms included within Alexa’s study. What then, if anything, is the defining difference between the two main choices you have before you?

Let us start with the downsides of WooCommerce. The primary drawback may be that it still very much acts like a blogging platform, which is hardly surprising given how WordPress have perfected this side of their offering. However this makes for a few quirks that interrupts the website owner’s ability to craft the perfect shopping experience.

Secondly, this is a platform with limitations. Problems with load times are widely reported when faced with large volumes of traffic at any one time.

Magento: The reasons behind such massive market share

Now for Magento… this platform, by comparison not only to WooCommerce, but to any other platform, is the body builder of the eCommerce world. It performs under the most demanding of pressures, accommodating huge amounts of shoppers with ease.

It has all that WooCommerce offers in terms of customisability, but is crowned the King of eCommerce by offering the most advanced and complete features of all. A prime example of this is the advanced reporting and the incredibly flexible inventory management options. This is all finished off as the perfect package with one of the largest and most feature rich collection of third party plugins out there, which can extend the capabilities of each and every website, creating a unique and finely honed user experience.

Full English are Magento super nerds. We love this platform and nothing gets us more excited than talking Magento extensions and how we can create awesome user experiences for our client’s website shoppers.
Think of us then as the Michelin star chefs of the technology world, cooking up delicious solutions for the eCommerce possibilities that you are yet to capitalise upon. So, if you’re ready to join the rest of the world in adopting all that Magento has to offer,
let’s get started!
